Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and gold macaw is an incredibly beautiful bird. Its stunning visual appeal is well-known. Its social nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also excellent at interaction and quickly master new terms and tricks.

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and will find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not involved enough with them. If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They need to spend at least two to three hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a nuisance for those living close by. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be scared by their roar.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it's important that the owner is patient and understands that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor and plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

System II builds upon the repertoire introduced in System 1 by incorporating exercises on equipment. It introduces teachers to exercises using the Spine Corrector and Magic Circle. This module comes with a handbook and a DVD with Lolita teaching you the System.
After you have completed the teacher training program of Lolita, you'll be able to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This program will enable you to work professionally, safely and effectively with clients. You will gain a thorough understanding of the various exercises and how they interact. You'll be able to apply this knowledge on any body to help your clients feel confident and secure. Lolita's Diet
As is the case with any animal species, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is based on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity could live up to 60 years old. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to move around and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health, but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she eats 115 pounds of salmon a day, in addition to herring, capelin and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.

While her beauty is undeniable Lolita's health continues deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction there for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.
Since her captor does not have to disclose the information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
